Installation
Installation of your Consul™ system would have been carried out by our own engineers and the unit would have been plugged into the mains and/or connected to your network (if required). If your unit(s) are connected to fixed spurs, then the final connection is your responsibility, and should be performed by a qualified electrical engineer.
Consul™ smart lockers come with ONARKEN® self-service locker software as standard, which our team would have connected to our locker management software.
For detailed instructions on how to set up and use our ONARKEN® Locker Management Software please view the ONARKEN documentation here:
Charging of Devices
Ensure that the power to the unit is on and the front panel indicator lights are illuminated (both red and green).
When illuminated; power is being supplied to the unit from the mains supply. If the indicator is off, please check the power supply to the unit.
When illuminated our power management systems are activated and power is being supplied to the charging ports (SmartLine™). If the red light is off or flashing, please contact LapSafe® Support as this could indicate a possible problem with one or more of the output channels that supply charging to your devices.
Front panel lights explained:
When illuminated, power is being supplied to the unit form the mains power supply. If the indicator is off, please check the power supply to the unit.
When illuminated, our power management systems are activated and power is being supplied to the charging ports (Chargeline™, ChargeLine ULTRA™ and SmartLine™). If the red light is off or flashing, please contact LapSafe® Support as this could indicate a possible problem with one or more of the output channels that supply charging to your devices.
SmartLine™
If you have chosen SmartLine™ with PowaSave™ then each locker bay has been fitted with LapSafe®’s ultra-safe pre-configured charging leads, specific to the make and model of your chosen device. You do not require the AC adaptors that come with your devices.
To charge a device place into a locker charging bay – only one device per shelf. Plug the black SmartLine™ charging cables provided in each bay into the corresponding device's power port to allow charging.

PowaSave™
PowaSave™ technology is designed to provide power savings over ‘duration charging’ of devices. This highly intelligent system is only available with SmartLine™. It automatically senses when a group of devices are fully charged, it then stops charging the group to avoid wasting power; thus making vast energy savings. All devices are still charged simultaneously in the fastest possible time.
BaseLine™
Consul™ also supports BaseLine™ asset storage, which is designed for non-chargable assets. If you choose this option, the full locker bay space will be available for asset storage, and no charging cables or plug sockets will be provided in BaseLine™ locker bays.
Chargeline™ and ChargeLine™ Ultra configurations are not supported on Consul™.
Options
Network connectivity
If your Consul™ features wired network connectivity, you can plug each tower (or tower that has the switch fitted) into your network by connecting a standard network cable into the switch.
Consul™ units can also be fitted with a Wi-Fi or 4G/5G antenna at additional cost.
Data transfer
If your purchase includes Data Transfer each locker bay will be network ready (these are normally black network cables within your charging bays), you can update all of your supported devices simultaneously inside the unit using Wake on LAN (WoL) software (provided by a third party).
Make sure that each tower is connected to the network, plug each individual black network cable inside the charging bay into the network port of each device and ensure that the Consul™ is switched on.
The devices are now ready to receive updates.
ONARKEN Locker Software
The Consul™ comes with ONARKEN locker software pre-installed and ready to use. This is operated from a 19" touchscreen, positioned within convenient reach and compliant with DDA and EN 301 549 requirements. No server applications are needed on the locker PC to set up or run the software. For a guide on basic functions and setting up the ONARKEN locker software, several guides will be released in due course.
Figure 2: ONARKEN self-service software running on a Consul™ Please Note: At no time should any super admin login ID's for administrative use of the locker software be distributed to anyone other than authorised ONARKEN® administrators.
Warranty
All Consul™ models come with a limited Lifetime Parts & Labour Warranty. To activate your FREE Lifetime* Parts and Labour Warranty, please refer to the warranty documentation inside your welcome pack or go on-line and register at lapsafe.com/warranty
Installation Requirements
Each Consul™ is configured in sections.
All Consul™ lockers have a User Screen Interface terminal section. This section allows the users to operate the installation, and to communicate with our ONARKEN locker management cloud-based software. Housed in this section are the 19" touchscreen, barcode/QR code scanner, and the PC running the ONARKEN locker software. The USI tower has 8 Locker bays located above and below the touchscreen (2 lockers above, 6 below the touchscreen)*.
*On older Consul™ models, there are no locker bays located on the screen unit. Instead there are storage units above and below the screen unit for storing the power supplies for the user identification scanners and thermal printer**. These are locked with CAM style locks.
The Consul also has Locker Bay Sections, these towers can have up to 10 lockers per section. Each LBS can also have a second scan identification reader installed as an optional extra. This allows the system to only unlock the correct locker when the user has confirmed their presence in front of the locker bay.
The locker doors swing through to approx. 105° at which point a rubber buffer will resist further movement. The door should not be forced past this point as this could damage the hinge. There is a stay-bar on the inside of the screen door to help limit its movement.
* On a standard Consul™ layout. Can be changed depending on requirements.
** This configuration is still available on request. Thermal receipt printers are no longer installed as an option on Consul™ lockers, and have been replaced with email receipts.
Care and Maintenance
Do:
- Lock your lockers when not in use (if applicable)
- Keep your keys in a safe place and not in the same room as the Consul™
- Keep a record of any key numbers
- Keep a record of the unit(s) serial number(s)
- Read the Health and Safety guidelines in the user guide and share this information with all users
- Activate your warranty at lapsafe.com/warranty
- Unplug charging leads before taking laptops out of the locker bays
Do Not:
- Do not leave keys in the door locks
- Do not remove doors
- Do not move the Consul™ in anyway without contacting LapSafe® Support to arrange for a qualified LapSafe® Engineer to move your unit for you
- Do not try to modify the Consul™ in anyway without contacting LapSafe® first to check that it is safe to do so
Disconnecting your Unit from the Mains Supply
Your Consul™ unit is connected to the mains supply via a standard 3-pin power cord, or a hardwired mains lead depending on configuration and age of the locker. Depending upon your installation's power specification will determine how you can isolate the unit from the main electrical supply.
Please note that each tower in an installation has its own mains supply, and all towers should be disconnected from the mains supply before any work is carried out on that installation.
Fixed Fused Spur Outlet: Isolate the ring main at your main consumer unit. Remove the fuse from the fuse holder to isolate it fully.†
Switched Fused Spur Outlet: Isolate the ring main at your main consumer unit. Switch OFF each fused spur and remove the fuse from the fuse holder to isolate it fully.†
13amp Mains Plug (non-Switched): Remove the plug from the socket.
13amp Mains Plug (Switched): Switch OFF the outlet and remove the plug from the socket.
† This power configuration is no longer offered on new Consul™ installations.
Switching On
The locker bay sections (LBS) are normally powered after installation/commissioning and should not be separately switched off.
To switch the PC and screen on, open the middle door of the User Screen Interface section (USI) and operate the
ON/OFF switch located on the shelf. The power LED's on the top panel will illuminate to confirm the power is on.It will take a few seconds for the Software to load up. The System will boot directly into the LapSafe® ONARKEN locker software self-service application.
When the system is booting up you will hear the barcode/QR code/MIFARE RFID scanner beep, this is normal.
The 19” Touch screen can also be switched off and on if needed, if you have switched the Consul™ on and the screen is black, make sure the screen is switched ON.
Power Requirements
Screen Terminal section
1 x 240v 13amp socket or switched fused spur, located above each User Screen Interface (USI) section.
1 x network data point located above each USI‡‡ This is not required if you are using a Wi-Fi or 4G/5G network connection.
Locker Bay Sections
1 x 240v 13amp socket or switched fused spur, located above each LBS.
When power is first switched on, the LBS will carry out a short ‘self test’ during which a number of short beeps will be heard from the power management system, the fan will run and the two LED’s above the top locker door will flash. After a few moment the LED’s will become steady which indicates that power is available to the charging and locking systems. Should either of the LED’s fail to illuminate or continue to flash there may be a fault with the power management. Restart, and if the problem persists please contact us on the support phone number or email as seen in the Useful Links section.Cleaning
Do:
- Your Consul™ has a powder coat finish which is very durable and can be wiped clean using a mildly soapy cloth.
- To remove more stubborn marks or perhaps an adhesive residue you can use a gentle solvent such as white spirit or a mild solvent-based cleaner.
Do Not:
- Do not soak any areas of the locker
- Do not get the power cassette, cooling fans, locker sockets, or charging cables wet
- Do not soak any area with solvent
- Do not use solvent cleaners on the locks
Cleaning of fans
Your Consul™ unit has a thermostatically controlled fan in the rear section of the top panel. Under normal operating temperatures, the fan is off. The fan will come on when the locker tower exceeds a pre-set temperature and continue to run until the temperature lowers below its lower set point. If the temperature rises, the unit will shut down automatically and sound an audible alarm.
Figure 3: Consul power unit cooling fan (viewed with the roof removed) Over time, dust and debris can partially block the fan filter and ventilation holes, preventing maximum airflow and causing the unit to not cool as expected.
Therefore, it is recommended that the fan filter and ventilation holes be checked and cleaned at least once every three months or if you suspect an increase in normal running temperature or if the unit shuts down.
The ventilation holes through the plinth, the doors¶/rear of the locker bays and the fan at the top of each section of the Consul™ must not be obstructed, allowing air to circulate. The fan at the top of each section is temperature controlled and may not run for periods of time.
¶ Consul™ Models manufactured from March 2025 onwards no longer have ventilation holes in the locker doors. These have been moved to the rear of the locker bays.
Should heat build up within any of the locker bay sections of the Consul™ and exceed a pre-set temperature (approx 36°C) the charging will cease within that section until the temperature falls back to acceptable limits. When the temperature exceeds the limit, the power management LED’s on the front of that particular unit will flash until it re-sets and an alarm will sound for approximately 10 seconds.
To clean the fan and ventilation holes, carefully agitate the dust with a suitable dry brush and extract the loose particles with a vacuum cleaner. Additionally, the ventilation holes can be wiped with a "damp" (not wet) cloth. Do not use a damp (or wet) cloth on the fan housing, as the primary charging electrics are below.
